What Shirk Means
This is why shirk is not limited to statues. A person can believe in one Creator yet direct worship through or to another being. Tawhid requires both belief that God is one and devotion to Him alone.

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
Quran 39:53

وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ ٱلنَّفْسَ ٱلَّتِى حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًۭا
سورة الفرقان · الآية ٦٨
And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.

Major Forms of Shirk
Muslim scholars use different teaching categories for major and minor forms. Those classifications are useful, but the foundation is simple: no act of worship and no uniquely divine right may be shared with creation.

The Islamic judgment concerns the doctrine and act, not a claim to know every person's inner state. God alone knows what evidence reached someone, what they understood, and how He will judge them.

They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

The Muslim response is that this conclusion depends on the very doctrine being tested. Jesus's own dependence, prayer, and words about "my God" fit a messenger more directly, while the Trinity was defined through later theological development.
